  • An accident which has caused injury to your mouth or jaw
  • Abscessed tooth
  • Wisdom teeth
  • Toothache

The Importance of Seeking Immediate Attention

While dental issues are often considered less important than other medical issues, the reality is that neglecting problems such as an abscessed tooth can lead to serious medical issues.

An abscess develops when an existing condition such as a large cavity, has been left untreated. This is a serious condition that can lead to serious illness - if the infection reaches the bloodstream it can even make you very sick.  The consequences of the infection are particularly severe for patients with weaker immune systems, children, the elderly, and patients with underlying medical conditions.

That’s why it’s crucial to seek immediate attention when experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Hot and cold flashes
  • Facial swelling
  • A pink protrusion near or around the affected tooth
  • Dizziness
  • Pain

Our goal is to save your tooth if at all possible. First, correct diagnosis is the key. Xrays and tests allow us to see if the tooth is still repairable. This can be done by performing a painless root canal. This procedure involves placing antibiotics on the inside of the tooth, after removing the bacteria that are causing the pain.

If not, the tooth will be extracted. With local anaesthetic, you won’t feel any pain at all during the procedure. Once you’ve healed, there are several options for replacing your missing tooth.

In order to prevent an abscess or other complication, see an emergency dentist if you have broken, chipped, or fractured a tooth, even if you aren’t experiencing any pain. The sooner you have it treated, the less likely you are to experience any further problems.
